School and Home!

Hello! I've spent the last two days doing orientation stuff at Doshisha University. We've met a lot of Japanese students, who are all very nice. This is our campus; it has a lot of brick buildings and cherry blossoms!

We also explored some of the shopping areas of Kyoto. This is Tera-machi, one of the arcaded shopping areas that's full of stores selling clothes, shoes, gifts, and food, and the nice subway operator that let me take a picture with him:

Today it was so exciting meeting our host families. I got picked up by my host dad and we took the subway / train home. They have a rather large house, and my room has a tatami mat floor!

This means I'll be assembling my bed each night and putting it away in the closet every morning.
The cool thing about staying with an older couple is the more traditional culture that I get to experience, like sleeping on the floor and taking baths every night in a specific order (father, mother, me). I just took my first bath in years earlier tonight, and showered while sitting on a little plastic stool! =D It was fun and relaxing! They have a really decked out bathroom, complete with a remote control and Japanese voice that comes on when you turn things on and off:

This was my first meal in my host family's house--tasty salad and curry rice homemade by my host mom.

Tomorrow we're going to a welcome party hosted by one of the other host parents. I'll take pictures of my host family and tell you more about them then!
